Undoubtedly music stores across the country have had to chang over the last decade due to emergence of digital downloading. Many are moving to the “vinyl model,” making vinyl records the crux of their business. As more and more music fans are collecting actual records, some stores are seeing a boom in business as a result. Just in West Ashley alone there are two stores who have embraced the vinyl resurgence— Monster Music and Earshot Records.
And both Monster and Earshot will be celebrating Record Store Day this Saturday, April 20 with various promotions and live in-store music performances. Record Store Day is a celebration of independent record stores and their place in their local communities. It’s is in its sixth year and has gone worldwide, with thousands of stores taking part, from as far away as Australia, Denmark, Greece, Hong Kong, Israel, Brazil, and many other countries.
Part of what makes Record Store Day special is the musicians who take time out of their schedules to do in-store appearances at the stores. At Monster Music, 946 Orleans Road there will be live performances starting at 1 p.m. with the Gullah Roots, 2 p.m. Company (Co.), 3 p.m. American Idol star Elise Testone, 4 p.m. An Era of Echos, 5 p.m. Godwin Falcon, 6 p.m. Hooded Eagle. More bands may be announced as well. At Earshot Records, located at 1662 Savannah Hwy., country music outlaw and radio host Shooter Jennings, the son of legendary country music star Waylon Jennings, will be live in the store at 3 p.m.
