Since March of 2011, Monster Music & Movies in West Ashley has hosted the Lowcountry’s only record convention, twice yearly, and in that time record sales across the country have exploded. This Saturday, Oct. 24 will mark the 10th Charleston Record Expo, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. In 2007 there were 994,000 vinyl LPs sold, and in 2015 sales will exceed 10 million. According to Monster Music owner Galen Hudson, vinyl sales this year are up 52 percent over last year alone and interest in records has never been higher since the industry started measuring sales.
At the Record Expo, vinyl record dealers from throughout the southeast will assemble in one location at West Ashley Shoppes (in the former Rug Décor store), offering a wide variety of albums, 45s, 78s, as well as DVDs, 8-tracks, magazines, and all sorts of other music memorabilia.
Records from a wide variety of genres will be available for sale, ranging from $1 to $100 and beyond. Hudson says there will be records to interest the casual observer, folks just getting started collecting records, and long-time collectors.
The event is free and open to the public. Experts will be on site offering appraisal to anyone interested in bringing in their own records.
“Interest in vinyl is at an unbelievable high, and values continue to rise. This is a great time to buy if you’re a fan, and sell if you have old records sitting around collecting dust,” says Hudson.
