Tin Roof Hosts Comedy Showcase

Local comedians Jeremy McLellan and Hunter Gardner are set to produce a monthly comedy showcase called “The Puppy Dog Comedy Show” at Tin Roof in West Ashley to highlight some of the area’s most talented comedians.
Tin Roof — primarily known for its almost nightly gritty punk and rock concerts — already holds Charleston’s longest running comedy open mic, so when Gardner and McLellan approached owner Erin Tyler, it was an intuitive fit.
“It is such a great place to see a performance and comics love going up there,” said Gardner. “The audience is close, the sound is good, and there’s a real sense of place, too. It’s perfect.”
The first show will be this Thursday, July 17, at 8 p.m.
“One thing Charleston is missing is a regular, short bill show. As a fellow comedian, you always want to put a lot of people on, but Jeremy (McLellan) and I wanted to give comedians a chance to know what it feels like to do ten or fifteen or twenty minutes, rather than the usually five or six on shows with bigger bills.”
McLellan will host the first show, which will feature Neil Bansil (The Most Races Show On Earth!), Hunter Gardner (Jailbreak, NC Comedy Festival), Lauren Krass (Charleston Stand Up Comedy Competition Finalist 2012, 2013) and Jason Groce (Charleston Stand Up Comedy Competition Winner, 2013), as the headliner.
The Puppy Dog Comedy Show aims to bring Charleston’s best talent to the stage in a traditional comedy showcase format, but Gardner and McLellan want to put on a diverse showcase as well.
“Having an assorted lineup keeps the show interesting and exciting — something for everyone. That includes race and gender, but also comedic styles. All of the comics on this show have a strong point of view, and voice. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
The Puppy Dog Comedy Show will take place Thursday, July 17 at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door. Tin Roof is located at 1117 Magnolia Road. For more information, call 571-0775.
