Pink House Neighborhood Resource Center receives $38,000 grant to foster community enrichment

from Staff Reports

The Seventh Day Baptist Community Development Education Service Outreach Ministries, operating under the moniker Pink House Neighborhood Resource Center, announced last month that it recently received a generous grant totaling $38,000 from the South Carolina House of Representative Ways & Means Committee. Recommended by Rep. Wendell Gilliard, the funding will bolster the Pink House’s ongoing mission to provide essential services and support to the Ardmore/Sherwood Forest communities in West Ashley and beyond.

Located at 1551 Mulberry St., Pink House is steadfast in its commitment to promoting diversity, fostering family literacy, enhancing neighborhood access to technology, and delivering a range of vital programs that empower the community’s youth, individuals with disabilities, and the elderly population.

Pink House’s comprehensive array of services includes a dynamic learning center, an enriching after-school program, an engaging summer camp for children, and a valuable resource center designed to address the unique needs of the West Ashley community.

Among the initiatives, this grant will help include:

A free, all-day summer camp with a strong educational focus aimed at mitigating the “summer slide” in learning, preparing students for their next grade, and engaging them in 21st-century learning activities that foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

• Student-led service-learning programs, where students will have the opportunity to connect with adults in the community through activities such as board games, puzzles, reading, and engaging discussions about life experiences.

• Monthly food distribution events featuring hot meals and home delivery for elderly members of the community.

• Round-the-clock access to freshly cooked meals, fresh produce, dairy products, and meats conveniently stored in a refrigerator located under the Pink House carport.

• Continuously available essential food staples, canned goods, dried goods, and toiletries, ensuring that neighbors have access to necessities 24/7.

• A free library stocked with quarterly community and family reading materials.

• A monthly book drive aimed at establishing home libraries for the children and members of our community.

• An open, community-driven platform for sharing gently used clothing, household goods, appliances, and other essential items.

• A free after-school program offering homework assistance and social emotional support, complete with hot, nutritious meals that can be enjoyed on-site or taken home for household members.
