“We don’t claim to be chefs. We just cook and prepare food very well,” says Jeannie Dillon of Foodies Café and Catering.
Since its opening late last year on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard in what used to be a Kentucky Fried Chicken, Foodies has quietly built a reputation among the residents who live around the restaurant. On sites such as Yelp and Urban Spoon, customers’ rave about the Fish Tacos, Roast Beef Panini, Turkey Club Sandwich, and the Fried Green Tomato BLT.
Foodies Café and Catering is the brainchild of Dillon and Jerry Crites. Dillon hails from Chicago, while Crites is a Lowcountry native. They met while working at the former Heirloom Eats in Mount Pleasant. Dillon has 20 years experience in catering. Crites loves to cook and has owned several food businesses.
“When Jerry learned I used to have a catering business back home, we realized we could blend our ideas for a new venture. Jerry bought Foodeze in 2009,” says Dillon. “We changed the name for a better fit. Robert & Sons Signs designed our logo, and produced our sign.”
“We attended the 2013 Charleston Wedding Show to introduce Foodies to the community. Since then, the catering side of our business has thrived on word of mouth alone,” says Dillon, who prides herself on offering clients personalized phone consultations and customized menus for all kinds of occasions. The personal touch continues through to the “big day.”
Foodies offers full-service catering, with a trusted team of experienced servers on site at every wedding, luncheon, and corporate function. For some weddings, Foodies has teamed up with Downtown’s WildFlour Pastry; otherwise, everything else is made in-house, with locally sourced ingredients. According to Dillon, everything is made to order from the freshest, most locally-sourced ingredients possible.
The Grab n’ Go program is a lifesaver for many working professionals and families in West Ashley. A weekly menu is delivered to a subscribers’ inboxes every Monday. Meals come in small (feeds 2-3) and large (feeds 4-6) sizes, and they change from week to week. Some recent offerings include Four Cheese Chicken Pasta, Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes, Crab Cakes, and Vegetable Lasagna. Thursdays-Saturdays, Barbeque and Fried Chicken meals are added to the menu. Customers in a time-crunch can call or fax in their order so a specific dinner is ready and waiting for them that evening. For takeout orders serving ten or more, delivery is also available.
Every weekday morning, Foodies opens at 7 a.m., serving breakfast all day long. Breakfast options include egg sandwiches, biscuits, pastries, three-egg omelets in four different styles (Three-Cheese, Meat Lovers, Farmers, and Greek), and two house specialties, Challah Bread French toast, and the very popular Mexican Scramble — a tortilla stuffed with egg, tri-colored peppers, avocado, red onion, spicy chorizo sausage, and cheese.
By lunchtime, the menu offerings expand to twelve salad options, nine dressing options, three taco options, ten traditional sandwich options, six Panini (hot pressed) sandwich options, and six flat bread pizzas. Beverage options include coffee, iced mochas, Tazo hot tea, soda, bottled drinks, juice, or milk.
The menu has plenty to offer diners of all stripes: meat lovers, vegetarians, and omnivores. It’s no exaggeration to say a customer could eat at Foodies every day and not eat the same thing twice. There’s just that much offered and plenty of opportunities to customize your order.
Crites and Dillon, who both live in West Ashley, say they are proud to own a business here. Foodies has a partnership with Ashley River School for the Arts and supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a mission near and dear to their hearts.
