West Ashley High School’s NJROTC Rifle Team took a trip to Summerville High School on Saturday, Dec. 12 to compete in the Great Region Six Area Six Rifle Qualifier. The competition began around 9am and lasted until 1:30pm. West Ashley High competed along with students from Summerville High School, South Florence High School, Andrews High School, Battery Creek High School, Colleton County High School, Myrtle Beach High School, and Wade Hampton High School.
Rifle competitions have personal awards as well as team awards. The personal awards are for highest prone score, highest standing score, and highest kneeling score. The award for highest prone and highest kneeling score went to WAHS student Sabrina Kettrick. The award for highest standing score went to WAHS senior Kaitlyn Champion. The best overall score is a personal score given to the students who come in first, second, and third place.
In third place was Thomas Abercrombie of South Florence High, second place was Sabrina Kettrick of WAHS, and in first place was Kaitlyn Champion of West Ashley High. The following is a breakdown of the top shooters of all the teams that participated; Lee Wayne Barrineau of Andrews, Aaron Wilson of Battery Creek, Noah Delooze of Colleton County, Driggers of Myrtle Beach, Thomas Abercrombie of South Florence, Sean Napier of Summerville, David Topper of Wade Hampton, and Kaitlyn Champion of West Ashley.
Only the top three teams advance to the regionals, which take place in Lexington at White Knoll High School on Jan 15 and 16. The top three teams overall were as follows: third place – Summerville High School, second place – South Florence High School, and first place – West Ashley High School.
