Lace up your running shoes for the 8th Annual Avondale 5K Run + Walk for Special Kids happening Saturday, Oct. 14 benefiting The Charles Webb Center. The Avondale 5K is the 6th largest 5K in Charleston and the only one in West Ashley! Despite Hurricane Matthew and the race’s cancellation, last year they raised over $55,0000 for Charles Webb! With the community’s help, they will continue that momentum this year.
Starting on Magnolia Road in front of Triangle Char and Bar (828 Savannah Highway), Avondale 5K runners and walkers will make their way through the lovely streets of the Avondale neighborhood in West Ashley. Strollers and dogs are welcome! The After Race Party starts as soon as participants cross the finish line. Triangle Char and Bar is hosting the party complete with music, and all-inclusive food and drinks. Awards and prizes will be given at the After Party.
This year’s presenting sponsors include Triangle Char and Bar and the Avondale Business Association. All proceeds from the Avondale 5K directly benefit The Charles Webb Center which is a non-profit, day care center that serves children from age 6 weeks to 10 years old who have developmental disabilities and special needs. The Center is under the umbrella of the Able Life Foundation, formerly known as the Disabilities Foundation of Charleston County, and is located at 1611 Evergreen Street, right off of Savannah Highway. For the team with the highest amount of money raised, Triangle will throw a private party for 25 people complete with drinks and food! Last year’s winning team, “Anna Blake” brought in close to $10,000.
The top winner will have the honor of their name being engraved on the prestigious “Stevie Award”, named after the late Stephen Condon in whose memory the race was founded. All attendees and participants are asked to please park in designated parking spaces and NOT on the race course.
Avondale 5K Run + Walk for Special Kids is held Saturday, Oct. 14. Race begins at 8 a.m., check-in and registration begins at 6:30 a.m. The after-race party is held 9-11 a.m. at Triangle Char + Bar, located at 828 Savannah Hwy. Cost $35 for race registration includes T-shirt, race, and entry to After Race Party. $40 for day-of registration; non-race participants can attend party for $20.
