For three days next week, the Avondale Point Business District will join Piccolo Spoleto for the first time ever in a three-day long creative arts celebration from May 26-28. The event will feature art walks, poetry, photography, comedy, dance, submitted art competitions, food, and good times. They will be staged between 6-9 p.m.
Event organizer Geoff Richardson of Lava Salon and founder of chART (Charleston Outdoor Art Initiative) said proceeds from the event will go toward fundraising efforts to create Avondale-specific signage. The proposed signs would be hung vertically on several corners to inform motorists and passersby that they have entered a unique part of town.
“We need to raise about $6,000 to accomplish our goals,” said Richardson, who has been instrumental in raising the area’s artistic profile.
The first night of chART-a-rama will be an especially family-friendly affair. Throughout the event, visual artists will auction off original pieces painted on mailboxes in a judged competition and art walk. The competition is open to students and artists of all experience levels. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded Thursday night at the event’s finale, which will be held at Voodoo Tiki Bar and Lounge with an “Almost Full Moon Lunacy Party” with DJ Rehab and black light body painting.
“Everyone has been very open and receptive to providing something for this event. It’s the community’s willingness to step up that makes Avondale so special,” says Richardson.
