West Ashley’s Montessori Community School leads the way in anti-bias initiative

from Staff Reports

Over the last 20 years, schools nationwide have committed to creating inclusive learning environments through the “No Place for Hate” program. Charleston County School District is becoming a designated “No Place for Hate” school district, and Montessori Community School in West Ashley is the model for this holistic, school-wide to improving school climate.

Created by the Anti-Defamation League, “No Place for Hate” is a student-led school climate improvement program that cultivates student leadership, unites the school community, and engages students and staff in active learning. The program uses the power of peer influence for good. As a “No Place for Hate” school, Montessori Community has made a public commitment to challenge bias and bullying.

“One of Maria Montessori’s most famous quotes is ‘establishing peace is the work of education’,” said Montessori Community School Principal Rachel Young. “I am humbled and in awe of the work that everyone at MCS does every day to create a peaceful, welcoming, inclusive environment for all. You can feel it when you walk into the building. It is a beautiful place.”

In celebration of this designation, Montessori Community held its first-ever whole-school “No Place For Hate” event recently. Students, staff, and parents formed a human chain around the school building to “hug the school.”

Through this national movement, students from all backgrounds have a framework that builds awareness and empowers students to take action. The program is designed to leverage the wisdom of students, teachers, administrators, and family members to plan and achieve their school climate goals.
