Get your running shoes ready — it’s time to get wild. The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) hosts its annual Where the Wild Things Run, a 5K run and walk on Saturday, March 3 at Caw Caw Interpretive Center in West Ashley.
Like many of the Charleston County Parks, Caw Caw Interpretive Center is full of wildlife and scenic trails. This provides runners and walkers with a little bit of paradise as they make their way through the wooded pathways. Plus, participants might even get lucky and see some wildlife.
Caw Caw Interpretive Center is a 654-acre site down Savannah Highway that’s rich in natural, cultural, and historical resources. The scenic park features more than seven miles of trails with trailside exhibits, elevated boardwalks through wetlands, historic rice fields, remnants of a former tea farm, and wildlife habitats.
The race begins at Caw Caw Interpretive Center at 8:30 a.m. on March 3. An award ceremony with light food and beverages will follow the race. T-shirts are guaranteed for participants who register prior to Feb. 16. The 5K run and walk is for ages 10 and up. Ages 10-15 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone; however, chaperones do not require registration or participation in the race. Dogs and bicycles are not allowed at Caw Caw.
Free family-friendly yoga and readings of Maurice Sendak’s classic Where the Wild Things Are will be offered throughout the morning, providing the opportunity for parents participating in the race to keep the little ones moving and engaged during the run or walk! Activities are appropriate for ages 6-12.
Online registration for Where the Wild Things Run is open now through 2 p.m. on March 2. If spaces are still available, late registration will be held on race day from 7-8 a.m. Registration fees are $32 or $26 for holders of the Move IT! pass. This 5K is another in a series of trail runs offered this year by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC). In April, CCPRC will host the Mullet Haul 5K, 10K, and 10K relay trail run at Johns Island County Park on Mullet Hall Road.
