Jim Werden died last Thursday night of an apparent heart attack at the age of 64. Werden was a football coach in the West Ashley area for nearly 30 years, including 26 seasons at Middleton High School and later three at the newly-formed West Ashley High School.
Werden won 204-games in his career, led the Middleton Razorbacks to the playoffs 20 times, and won the Division II-AAAA State Championship in 1982. He was named South Carolina Coach of the Year that year.
In 2000 Middleton and St. Andrew’s High Schools merged to form West Ashley High School. Werden was the obvious choice to take over the program and he coached the Wildcats in their first three seasons.
