Holy City Salsa Dance Studio, Charleston’s only Latin dance studio, has just opened its doors in West Ashley. And when you walk through the front doors, you’ll feel like you’ve whisked into a scene straight from a movie. Crystal chandeliers, vintage banana leaf wallpaper, and photos from Havana are the backdrop for dancers of all levels moving to richly layered Latin music.
The Ashley River Road studio, is kicking off it’s Grand Opening this weekend with a Salsa social on Sunday, Sept. 4, followed by a week of free and discounted classes.
Charleston salsera Georgia Grace opened the studio with the intention of creating a hub for Latin dance in the community. “A lot of people don’t realize that we have a rich and vibrant Latin dance community,” says Grace, a professional dancer with almost 20 years of dance experience. “I wanted Holy City Salsa to be a place for people to congregate around that community — connect with like-minded people, experience the joys and benefits of dancing, and have a blast doing something outside of the norm.”
Holy City Salsa specializes in Salsa dance lessons for all levels, and also offers Bachata (a Latin dance that originated in the Dominican Republic), Kizomba (an Angolan partner dance), Studio-to-Stage performance classes, Zumba Fitness, children’s programs, and special events.
Holy City Salsa evolved from Baila ConmiGA, Georgia Grace’s itinerant Latin dance company that hosted Spirits and Salsa at the Striped Pig Distillery, performed in Strings and Salsa at the Charleston Music Hall, and taught lessons and performed in the Charleston area and throughout the Southeast.
Holy City Salsa Dance Studio celebrates its grand opening on Sunday, Sept. 4. It’s located at 1954 Ashley River Road, Suite H (behind Rite-Aid off Savage Road), For more information, visit www.HolyCitySalsa.com.
