A Sweet Dream Come True

“Baking is my passion, my hobby, and career. It is part of who I am,” says Jaclyn Story, the owner of Gala Desserts, West Ashley’s new coffee and dessert bar.
Featuring a revolving seasonal, upscale dessert menu, specialized beer, wine, coffee, and a cocktail menu to accent the dessert offerings, Gala is more than just a bakery or coffee shop. It’s a dream come true for Story, who has been a pastry chef at Maverick Southern Kitchens, Kaminsky’s, Normandy Farms Artisan Bakery, and Michelangelo’s Kitchen.
“I have been dreaming up this concept for some time,” says Story, who has built a strong wedding and specialty dessert clientele over the years. “I wanted to branch out and follow my heart and a dream. I had a complete vision for the space and menus, a look, and feel. I felt compelled to put it into action.”
Located in a highly visible storefront in the bustling Avondale Point Business District, Story envisions Gala as much more than just a dessert or coffee shop. She sees it as a meeting place for the community, an environment for people to really relax and enjoy in-house coffee, desserts, and spirits.
“I love the vibe of Avondale and the sense of community. I think the neighborhoods will enjoy having a little upscale shop to eat, drink, and relax,” says Story. “I really wanted to create a unique and special shop — a serene, calming space to indulge and enjoy in something special.”
Gala also offers a full cocktail, beer, and wine menu specifically designed to pair with all of its dessert offerings. “We encourage customers to ask our staff for recommendations,” says Story.
Besides making all the in-house desserts, Story will continue to make edible art in the form of wedding, 3D cakes, and event desserts.
“As a pastry chef, I am constantly evolving and creating,” she says. “I come from a large Italian family where sweets have always been a focal point. I feel so fortunate to truly love what I do.”
