The following were taken from actual incident reports filed last week by the City of Charleston Police Department. These are not convictions and the names of businesses, complainants, and suspects have been left out to protect the innocent. All suspects are  innocent until proven guilty … of course.

January 4 | Intimidation
Police were called to a Savannah Highway address where a West Ashley man reported being threatened by a childhood friend via a series of texts. The man said his friend’s childhood home in North Charleston had recently been shot at, and the friend apparently held him responsible. The messages included: “Really bruh really? Smh sad my momma saw yo car too, yall trying to kill my [edited] mama!! A lady who loved u like her own son u try to kill!! Ok now its war.” The man said he doesn’t even own a car.

January 4 | Simple assault
A Magnolia Road man told police that earlier that night he and a friend were assaulted by an unknown man after they tried to assist a woman. The two had been watching a football game at an Avondale Point bar and were walking down Magnolia Road toward another bar when they spied what appeared to be two women in distress. After engaging with one of the women, a man’s voice came out from a distance, “You have two minutes.” The next thing the man knew, he was hit in the face, and a fight ensued with the unknown man. The man said he could not remember close to two minutes prior to the fight and 10 minutes after the fight. A witness said the unknown man had put the friend in a chokehold.

January 4 | Injured party
Police responded to a Sam Rittenberg grocery store where they found an unresponsive woman, lying face down on the floor of the bathroom. Police attempted to rouse the woman several times, including rubbing her sternum. When EMS arrived, they were able to rouse the woman, who said she was an asthmatic and had spells where it was hard for her to breath. The woman said she did not have her inhaler on her at the time.

January 4 | Sexual exposure
A woman told police that a man publicly masturbated at her while she was going for a walk near the intersection of Ashley Gardens Boulevard and Sycamore Shade Drive. The man had pulled up next to her in a pickup and began masturbating while looking at her. She said his penis and his stroking motion were visible.

January 4 | Shoplifting

Police arrested a woman and put another on trespass notice at the West Ashley Wal-Mart after reviewing video that showed the woman trying to push a cart filled with unpaid for items out to her friend’s car. The items included an outdoor grill, a tower heater, two virtual reality headsets, a fishing reel, and other items. The arrested woman said the plan was to grab items worth more than $20 apiece and then sell them later for money.

January 4 | Injured party
Police kicked in the door of a Telfair Way residence to find out if the resident was alive. The man’s mother had called; concerned with his health due to his past drinking habits and that he was not answering his phone or having been to work for three straight days. Police found the man’s vehicle in the lot, and the door to his unit locked. After kicking in the door and calling out multiple times, police found the man lying across a bed, and eventually woke him. When the man tried to walk, he fell down on his stomach and was unable to get up. EMS transported the man to a nearby hospital.

January 5 | Burglary
Residents at several Pinckney Park homes reported that someone had gained entry to their homes via back windows, rousted their belongings, and made off with expensive items.

January 5 | Burglary
Police arrested a suspected burglar soon after a Wappoo Road resident reported his house having been entered, and a neighbor providing a description that fit the man’s description, who fled once the resident arrived home. When police brought the man to the residence for identification, the homeowner said that he was the one he saw fleeing his home. Missing was a handgun and other items.
