On Friday, September 30, West Ashley High School hosted Alumni Night, an event that has already become tradition after only three years. The event invites the alumni from St. Andrews, Middleton, and West Ashley, the three West Ashley schools, to come together to celebrate the rich history and success of each.
The event was kicked off at 6pm in front of Wildcat Stadium with a Wildcat Family Tailgate sponsored by the West Ashley High Baseball Team. All were welcome and were able to get lowcountry boil, hot dogs, and some sweets for a very reasonable price. The team set up games like corn hole and had a jump castle so that families could come and enjoy themselves before the game got underway. The team plans to do this again on October 28th before the game against Wando.
During halftime, alumni from St. Andrews, Middleton, and West Ashley took to the field if they wanted to participate in the halftime presentation. Each year on Alumni Night, West Ashley High plans to recognize different sports teams from each of the three schools who received state titles. Last year, Middleton High School’s 1982 State Championship Football Team, its players, and coaches were all recognized. St. Andrews Parish High School’s 1965 State Championship Boys Basketball Team, the 1968 State Championship Girls Basketball Team, the 1968 State Championship Boys Basketball Team, and former St. Andrews and West Ashley coach Dave Spurlock were chosen as this year’s honorees.
WAHS athletic director, Richard Luden, read the History of the Three West Ashley Schools during the presentation. During the reading, it talks about when each particular school was established and some of the history surrounding it. When Luden got to St. Andrews’ section, he stopped to talk about the three teams, their records, and introduced the players that were present. He also took a few minutes to talk about Dave Spurlock and his contribution to St. Andrews, West Ashley, and to CCSD. Spurlock was presented with a St. Andrews football that Luden had held onto which had been signed by many of his former players.
The West Ashley High School Marching Band played all three alma maters during the presentation as another way to celebrate the history of the three schools. While each song was played, the alumni from that particular school sang the words to their alma mater.
This truly was a great event for the high school and for all those who came before. West Ashley High’s Athletic Department is already making plans for next year and plans to announce an official date for the event and a list those who will be recognized soon.
