In March of 1974 Richard Nixon was still president of the United States. Months later he would resign amidst the Watergate scandal. While Washington D.C. was wrapped in turmoil, 640 miles away in Atlanta, Ga. something far less scandalous but no less buzz-worthy was happening. The first Mellow Mushroom opened in an old liquor store near Georgia Tech that year when three college students saw pizza baking as an art form and wanted to open a different kind of pizza shop. To accommodate the long lines and gaining popularity, more Mellow Mushrooms sprung up around Atlanta. By the late 1980s Mellow Mushroom began franchising. The Mellow Mushroom family has grown since 1974 to encompass around 200 stores in more than 20 states.
Five years ago, Michael Shemtov, Johnny Hudgins, and Joshua Broome opened their second Charleston Mellow Mushroom franchise in a former movie theatre in the Avondale neighborhood of West Ashley. The trio have since opened their third franchise in Summerville and are about to open another at the the Tanger Outlets in North Charleston.
This Saturday, March 26 in honor of the year the very first Mellow Mushroom opened in Atlanta, Mellow Mushroom Avondale will be turning the clocks back — way back — to 1974 with the fifth annual Disco Brunch to celebrate its fifth-year anniversary in West Ashley. Throw-back costumes are encouraged and a special 1974 menu with 1974 prices will be available from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Customers are encouraged to dress up in disco outfits while enjoying some Mellow Mushroom favorites at a serious bargain.
