In February, caterer Aris Newton and sports store owner Tommy Eiserhardt teamed up to buy one of West Ashley’s most iconic restaurants, located within the oldest strip shopping center on the East Coast. Being locals, Newton and Eiserhardt seem to have an appreciation for the space’s history, renaming it The Med Eatery and Bar, a play off of the longtime South Windermere anchor’s previous names, most recently Med Bistro and Med Deli before that.
With continental cuisine and a new, soothing decor, Newton (no relation to former owners Buzzy and Rebecca Newton) and Eiserhardt kept the kitchen and server staffs to provide continuity in the quality of the cuisine and service. But there are plenty of changes taking place at The Med. The restaurant’s new logo is stylish yet classic. And there’s a new, subdued ambience as a row of booths have now been replaced with dividing walls, painted in shades of gray and embellished with large pieces of local artwork of serene landscapes of Lowcountry scenes, which are for sale.
The menu includes Southern classics such as deviled eggs, fried chicken, pork barbecue, and tomato pie. But there are also modern favorites, such as roasted beet salad, a black bean burger, and a fried turkey wrap just to name a few.
The Med’s Sunday brunch features classic items, such as eggs benedict, omelets, and pancakes. But it also includes dishes that have a more modern twist, like a crab cake benedict, banana bread French toast, and a Lowcountry omelet of seafood, tomatoes, goat cheese, and basil. Daily specials are offered; a favorite being half–priced burgers on Mondays.
The long bar is still in place, with more craft beer options and still offering a large and impressive wine selection. At the bar there are four flat-screen televisions, showing sports games. There’s an additional bar menu available from 4 until closing, offering black bean sliders with avocado and goat cheese and fried oysters with remoulade, as well as classic fried chicken wings.
The Med Eatery and Bar offers lunch: Mon.-Sat.: 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; dinner: 5-10 p.m., and Sunday brunch: 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. It is located at 90 Folly Road, in the South Windemere Shopping Center. For more information call 766-0323 or visit themedeateryandbar.com.
