Jericho Arts, the artsier arm of Jericho Advisors, located in Avondale Business District, hosted an opening reception last week for a solo exhibition of work by Cory Oberndorfer. The exhibit is entitled Pop: Summer and features several works of popsicles.
Many turned out to see the ultra realistic popsicle paintings and meet Oberndorfer, who is a lover of popular culture and Americana. Oberndorfer’s work fixates on the enjoyment of the simple pleasures in life, such as posicles. Appropriately for the opening reception, local popsicle company King of Pops was on hand giving out their delicious handmade frozen treats. Pop: Summer will be on display in Jericho’s gallery through Sept. 30.
Oberndorfer received his MFA from American University in Washington, D.C. and BFA from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. His work has been exhibited at Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana, CA, Redux Contemporary Art Center in Charleston, SC, Flashpoint Gallery, Hierarchy, and G Fine Art in Washington, D.C.
In the exhibition, Oberndorfer presents his most recent work, which focuses solely on popsicles. They are simple images, slightly shiny, and dripping with temptation. The Popsicle embodies an essence of innocence, youth, nostalgia, and the dream of an endless summer. Despite the hard edges, spray paint is used to provide both soft-focus contours and the crystallized texture of frozen treats. Minimal in their shape, form, and color, these works do not ask the viewer to deal with the painting itself but with their own memories.
Pop: Summer | Artwork by Cory Oberndorfer will be on display through the end of September at Jericho Advisors, located at 815 Savannah Hwy. For more information, call 212-8482 or visit www.artsjericho.com
