Photographer Tanya Bogg’s “Re:incarnation” series is a darkly captivating body of work that began during her last year at graduate school as she dealt with the passing of a family member. Through long walks she found herself collecting all kinds of unusual memorabilia with the intent, at the time, not for art, but to preserve the things she found.
“The original impulse to collect things started with mourning and grief; I didn’t question the impulse to collect things, I just did it,” says Boggs.
From sun-bleached jawbones to recently deceased honey bees, Boggs would gather these macabre items and store many of them in jars at her workshop. But it wasn’t until she scanned a few of the containers and shared the images with her mentor that she decided to translate her bottled assortment into a body of work.
“It became important to me, holding onto and preserving things. Each of the objects took on a meaning to me – some were death, some were remembrance. I continued to build and grow the collection and eventually I started taking things out of the jars and scanning them [on a flat-bed scanner] on their own, composing them in the frame,” says Boggs.
It’s this collection, drawn from a deeply emotive period in Bogg’s life, which will be on display at Jericho Advisors starting Thursday, February 20, with a gallery opening and reception from 6 – 9 p.m.
While a traditional photographer during the day through her company Tanya Boggs Photography, Boggs is also a professor of Digital Photography at the College of Charleston and has presented her artistic collections in galleries across the country, including Everson Museum of Art and the Forest City Gallery in Ontario. She was also recently featured in the 2013 edition of American Art Collector and her photography has been published in several magazines including Camera Arts and on the cover of The Sun.
“I’m definitely excited about seeing Charleston’s reaction to the work. I moved here from San Francisco a few years ago and never considered a gallery showing until I talked with Josh [Silverman, CEO of Jericho Advisors]. Charleston has a very different market and I can’t wait to see how people respond to it,” says Boggs.

The reception for “Re:incarnation” will be held on Thursday, February 20, from 6 – 9 p.m. The opening is free and open to the public, and complimentary hors d’oeuvres and libations will be offered. Jericho Advisors, an investment management and business service company, is located at 815 Savannah Highway in Avondale, West Ashley, between Avondale Wine & Cheese and Gene’s Haufbrau.
