West Ashley’s newest art center Fabulon will host its first-ever art show, Souvenirs of Summer, on Friday Aug. 28. Refreshments will be served at an opening reception from 5-8:30 p.m. as the public gets the chance to see Fabulon for first time.
Souvenirs of Summer will feature many works from new and emerging artists. This particular show aims to commemorate the summer as it comes to a close. Fabulon founder Susan Irish wanted to discover artists with specific ideas about art, and that’s just who she found for the upcoming event.
According to Irish, the show focuses on the end of the summer, but also hopes to draw attention on life’s brevity. She thinks that this first show exemplifies artists who are all trying to capture lost time. Though the selected work ranges from extreme realism to the most abstract of works, Irish believes that each selected artist has instilled a piece of themselves in the work they presented to her.
Souvenirs of Summer will feature works by Meyriel Edge, Susanne Frenzel, Laura McRae Hitchcock, Joy McGugan, Steven Owen, Austin Grace Smith, Sharon Turk, and Susan Irish. It will remain on display through Sept. 30.
Fabulon doubles as a learning center in addition to a gallery. Irish aims to establish an environment where a range of artists can feel comfortable. Irish says she hopes to see creative collaboration, and encourages artists of all ages and mediums to step out of their comfort zones and try something new. Fabulon is a place for people interested in reigniting, exploring, [and] discovering creativity,” says Irish. There will also be products such as original furniture and jewelry, as well as classes. Irish has established “part gallery, part studio, part classroom.”
Although Fabulon is Irish’s brainchild, she’s more than open to ideas. Irish says she’s interested in receiving inquiries from anyone with an idea for a class they’d like to teach or take. She wants to give local artists the opportunity to explore high quality art without feeling any judgment.
Souvenirs of Summer will open Friday, Aug. 28, with a reception from 5-8 p.m. at Fabulon, A Center For Art & Education, located at 1017 Wappoo Road. For more information, call 566-3383 and visit www.fabulonart.com.
