Senior Wildcat safety and running back Tyquan Campbell was named this week’s Athlete of the Week. “It’s exciting and I feel honored,” says Campbell. This is Campbell’s fourteenth year playing football and he loves it. “I like the contact and the people I play with,” says Campbell. He explained that it’s important to like the people on the team in order to win. “It’s a team sport,” says Campbell. “You can’t do it by yourself.”
Without teamwork, Campbell would not be able to accomplish his goals. He wants to break the school record of completing six successful interceptions; he already has four. Campbell follows two rules in order to help achieve his goal: eating healthy and practicing to his fullest potential. Campbell focuses on cone drills and ladders during practice because they improve his agility, speed, and quickness.
Following these rules has also impacted Campbell’s performance during games. “Tyquan Campbell scored two touchdowns on Friday vs. James Island, one on offense and one on defense,” says Head Football Coach Robert Marion. Campbell was proud of his performance during the game. He intercepted two passes, ran for two touchdowns, and threw a touchdown pass.
Despite his stellar performance, Campbell was upset that not all of his passes during the game were good, so he makes himself work harder at practice. His main path to success is being with his coaches and teammates every day. “They teach me to be a better teammate and better person,” says Campbell.
Even though Campbell performs well during games, sometimes his teammates get in the way. He explains that his ability to perform is impacted when his teammates don’t do what the coaches ask. To overcome this problem, he gets on his teammates and tells them to straighten up. “[He] is a team leader on the field,” says Marion. Campbell has been a starter and a captain for the entire season, and uses this role to help his teammates perform. Just as Campbell pushes his teammates, Campbell’s father pushes him. “He pushes me hard, each and every day,” says Campbell.
In addition to football, Campbell also plays baseball for West Ashley High. Besides sports, he likes hanging out with his friends and making new ones. In the future, Campbell plans to play football for Newberry College where he wants to pursue a career in Computer Programming. He likes their football games, student body, and campus. “It’s an awesome school,” says Campbell.
