On March 10 and 11, West Ashley High’s Orchestra hosted and participated in the Lowcountry Orchestra Performance Assessment. West Ashley gave an excellent performance which resulted in a Superior Rating.
This competition served as this year’s Regional Performance Assessment. Every year, the South Carolina Music Educators Association (SCMEA) sponsors the Regional Performance Assessment. Each orchestra gets a score, rating, and comments based on their performance. The judges score each orchestra according to tone, intonation, rhythmic precision, musical effect (style, dynamics, phrasing), and performance position and formal presentation.
“The Orchestra’s performance was excellent. I am very proud of how far they have come,” says Orchestra instructor Stephanie Silvestri. “They really polished their music to a very high level [and have] really improved their intonation and ensemble skills this year.”
Over 40 Orchestras participated in the Regional Performance Assessment attended from as far away as Sumter High, Airport High, and Bluffton High, and as close as Wando High, C.E. William Middle, and Laing Middle.
The following schools received a Superior Rating: Charleston County School of the Arts, Laing Middle School, Wando High School, Haut Gap Middle School, Cario Middle School, Sumter High School, and Airport High School.
