There’s good news for anyone tired of driving or walking down Wappoo Drive between Savannah Highway and Skinner Avenue after it’s rained.
The County of Charleston began work  on Monday, July 22 to improve the storm drain system and replace the existing sidewalks. That means that it won’t resemble the Crosstown during a rainstorm, and that’s a good thing.
Also, to minimize disruption to car traffic, most of the work will be done in “off-peak” hours, and there will be no lane closings between 4 p.m. and 9 a.m. That means it won’t resemble Highway 61 during its multiple rush hours.
The project is funded by the Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax and managed by Charleston County Government, in close coordination with the City of Charleston.  Anyone with questions about the project can call Charleston County’s Transportation Development Department at 202-6154.
