West Ashley High School beat the Colleton County Cougars 35-28 last Friday night at Wildcat Stadium to reach a perfect 4-0 record for the first time in school history.
The game was a story of two halves as the Wildcat defense held the Cougars scoreless in the first half. The Wildcats offense used a little razzle-dazzle as head coach Bobby Marion called for a fake punt, with the snap going to the up-back instead of the punter on 4th down. Up-back Bobby Ruff scampered 33 yards for the Wildcats first touchdown thanks to key blocks from Lee Russell to seal the corner and Anthony Lacosta down field. The touchdown was the only score for either team in the first half
The second half started in favor of the Wildcats as Colleton County fumbled the opening kickoff, which was recovered by WAHS on the Cougars’ 25-yard line. The Wildcats soon made it a 14-0 game as Marquize Jenkins avoided the Cougar defense on a 21-yard touchdown run, his first of three on the night.
But on their next possession Colleton County drove 64 yards for a score, capped by a 2 yard run to make it a 14-7 game.
The Wildcats made it 21-7 on the next drive with a 12-yard touchdown run by Jenkins.
Then the Wildcats capitalized on a failed fake punt by Colleton County on 4th down and Jenkins scampered for his third touchdown of the night on the ensuing play, making the score 28-7.
The Cougars fought back, however, making the score 28-14 on a 49-yard touchdown run by the Cougar quarterback.
WAHS increased its lead to 35-14 on a 22-yard pass from Pedro Manigault to Anthony Vincelli.
The Cougars were still not ready to throw in the towel,  as they scored on a long pass on the next possession and recovered the ball on the ensuing kickoff which they converted for a touchdown to get within 7 points of the undefeated Wildcats.
But in the end WAHS was able to hold the Cougars in the final minutes and run the clock out for their fourth win of the season.
Jenkins had 91 yards rushing and three touchdowns for the game. Manigault had 82 yards rushing and a passing touchdown. Senior placekicker Caroline Cashion rounded out the scoring with five extra points in five attempts.

This week the Wildcats go on the road to face a dangerous Summerville Green Wave (3-1) team as they try keep a perfect record.
