Last Saturday West Ashley High School faced cross-county rival Wando High in the opening round of the South Carolina AAAA Lower State Baseball Tournament.
Wando scored early, giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead and then adding another run in the top of the 5th inning. But the Wildcats responded when junior pitcher Jordan Merritt helped himself out with a drive to the fences in the bottom of the fifth inning, bringing the crowd to their feet and tying the game up at 3-3.
But in the sixth inning Wando ripped one passed the WAHS third baseman, giving the Warriors a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the final inning with the game on the line, it looked like WAHS had a dramatic ending prepared with bases loaded. But in the end it just didn’t work out for the Wildcats as they couldn’t get the base runners across the plate.
In the end, WAHS left eight base runners stranded. Merritt led the Wildcats at the plate, going 2-4 with a double and 3 RBIs. On the mound, he also struck out seven and walked four.
Wando moved on to face Sumter and WAHS will face Lexington Monday (after press time) at home in an elimination match.
