The West Of chART Box Art Walk and Competition was held last Friday, Sept. 5 at various businesses in the Avondale Point Business District. The event was a culmination of a the West Of chART Box Community Art Project, which paired 31 local artists with 31 ugly, old metal newspaper boxes that West Of recently obtained. As part of the chART — Charleston Outdoor Art Initiative, the project was designed to create 31 unique pieces of community art that would also happen to serve as West Of’s newspaper boxes. Nearly 70 talented, local artists applied to be a part of the project and the end result was even more incredible than anyone could have imagined.
More than 300 folks came out to support the artists and vote on their favorite box on Friday. The judges for this contest were acclaimed local visual artist Nathan Durfee, Art Mag publisher Olivia Poole, Redux Contemporary Art Center Director of Operations Greg Colleton, and Amy Pastre, co-owner of Stitch Design Co.  A fifth “judge” was the attendees, who voted by putting quarters in their favorite newspaper box. At the end of the night $664.75 in quarters was raised for chART.
The Grand Prize winner was Matt Wilson, who’s stunning mini-cyborgs, created by hand out of spoons and forks, climbed their way to the $500 prize. Patch Whiskey’s “Area 31”  box took 2nd place and the $100 runner-up prize. Third place went to Sean Williams’ “Robot Box.” Todd St. Onge and Cody Peaster took home prizes for fourth and fifth place respectively. Deane Bower’s “Chicken Coop” box, which was adorned with things found around Avondale — such as lug nuts from Gerald’s tires, pull tabs, random screws — took home the trophy for “Most West Ashley” box.
While the Art Walk and Competition has concluded, there is still one more category that is be decided — The West Of Reader’s Choice! West Of is asking you vote for your favorite box(es) on FACEBOOK between Sept. 9-21. The box that receives the most “likes” will win the “Reader’s Choice” award, which is a prize pack, featuring gift certificate and items from West Ashley businesses.
