Local firefighters worked hard last Thursday to contain a fire at Robert and Sons Signs Company, the local outfit responsible for West Ashley’s landmark Coburg Cow signage.
Just after dusk, the St. Andrews Fire Department, aided by other local safety personnel, responded to a structure fire at the company’s location, 3915 Savannah Hwy. Five minutes after the call for service, firemen rolled up on the scene.
Immediately it became apparent that the fire had already broken through the roof near the front of the business, according to officials. Crews went to work fighting the fire from the outside as a water supply was established and traffic was stopped in both directions.
Within 45 minutes, crews had the fire under control, but not before it had damaged roughly 30 percent of the building, according to St. Andrews Fire Department Sr. Captain Nathan Murtaugh, who is also a fire marshal.
Investigators are still looking into the cause of the blaze, which injured one firefighter, who treated for a heat-related issue and released from a local hospital.
No word if any of West Ashley’s “sacred cows” were harmed in the incident.
