The West Ashley Optimist Club recently honored a local police officer, naming Terryann Ferguson its Respect For Law Community Hero of the Year.
Ferguson was patrolling the Hazelwood Road on Easter Sunday when a woman came running outside of her apartment yelling, “Help my baby, help my baby.”
The woman had been giving her infant daughter a bath when she stepped out of the room to grab the child’s clothes, and when she returned the child had stopped breathing.
Hearing the screams, Ferguson took the baby, placed it on the trunk of her cruiser, and administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. The baby began breathing again.
After emergency medical staff arrived, the baby was transported to a local hospital.
“I believe God put me in the right place at the right time to actually save this life,” Ferguson said.
Optimist Clubs are volunteer service organizations that work to improve the lives of children and their communities.
