Matt Baer grew up participating in the Charleston Jewish Community Center (JCC) and finished his service in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) paratrooper’s brigade in August 2013. On Tuesday, July 29 at 7 p.m. Baer will discuss his experience as a Lone Soldier (in Hebrew, chayal boded: a soldier with no family in the country). Baer will also discusses The Lone Soldier Center, which is a grassroots organization dedicated to improving the off-base lives of Israel’s community of lone soldiers. Residents are invited to learn why a person might decide to join the IDF and what life is like for a lone soldier in the IDF.
