My good friend and business partner attended the recent TED Talks of Charleston.  If you aren’t familiar with TED Talks, it is a non-profit “devoted to ideas worth spreading.” The basic gist is that an audience attends a series of lectures by innovative speakers. I love the TED YouTube channel and often look to it as a source of inspiration.
When TED came to Charleston, I was bummed that I had a conflict on my schedule, but I was excited to go to dinner with my friend who attended and learn about her experience. Over crusty Italian bread and a glass of wine, she regaled me with antidotes from the speakers, favorite stories and take-aways.
One of the speakers she had the opportunity to listen to was Simran Singh. Singh is the publisher of 11:11 Magazine and the host of the syndicated 11:11 Talk Radio, specializing in motivation, metaphysics, and spirituality. Singh’s talk was on the signs we see in everyday life. She believes that everything means something and is a conversation from the universe speaking to you. We just have to listen. Intrigued by my friend’s description, I went to the local Charleston TEDx YouTube channel and watched her talk.
Singh often sees the number 11 everywhere, especially after a dark period in her life.  To her, every time she sees the number 11, it’s a reminder to her that she’s not alone in the universe. Her talk was interesting and I value her perspective, but I wasn’t buying it.  Maybe it has to do with my signs from the universe.
I walked away wondering what the signs in my life mean?  Lately, I’ve been seeing one shoe in the road everywhere. Not a pair of shoes. or the more often seen pair of shoes thrown over a telephone wire. But, just one single shoe always in the middle of the road.  I like to think of a driver just so over their single shoe that they throw it out the window exasperated, yet I can’t recall a single time I wanted to throw away just one shoe. And why in the middle of the road? For me, this is the one-shoe phenomenon. I mentioned the shoe sightings to my friend and she texted me the next morning, “You’re not going to believe this but I just saw one shoe in the road.”
The text made me giggle. Singh’s sightings held so much deep and profound meaning for her and 11 is kind of a magical number. I yearn to be deep and profound but I’m goofy and my short attention span keeps me from actually   meditating, so it’s only appropriate that my “sign” would be dirty, discarded shoe sightings.
If everything means something, what do my sightings mean? I should pare down my closet and especially my shoes (my husband would support this one!) I should look into helping people who need shoes? Or maybe it just means that we notice the things we are paying attention to. Once I noticed the shoes, I saw them everywhere and still do. In the past, the shoes just made me wonder. Now, I’ll take a page from Singh’s book and think of them as a little “hello” to me from the universe.
