In Avondale, Josh Silverman is known as a strong supporter of the arts, offering his financial advisors office, Jericho Advisors, up as a premiere gallery for established and up-and-coming artists in a broad variety of mediums. From high quality scans of bird skeletal structures to mixed media and even food porn, Silverman’s office is as unique as its arts-inspired Avondale environment.
It was no surprise, then, when Silverman popped up as one of the guest speakers at an upcoming fine arts lecture for the public on kick starting your photography career at the Citadel. Along with Stacy L. Pearsall, a two-time winner of the NPAA Military Photographer of the Year whose work has appeared in Time Magazine, USA Today, and Sports Illustrated, as well as Stan Foxworthy, a 35 year photography veteran and owner of Foxworthy Studios, and Cheryl Smithern, CEO of Charleston PR & Design, Silverman joins the board of fine arts experts as a financial advisor who specializes in helping artists get on their financial feet and stay there.
“After getting my Masters in Art History I worked for years as an art dealer. And part of what got me involved in financial advice for a living was seeing all of these artists mismanage their money, or young artists getting a check from a painting and just taking off and spending it all in a couple days. Since then, I’ve worked with all sorts of artists, from art dealers to graphic designers, photographers, painters, as well as traditional entrepreneurs like lawyers and doctors. But what I have a knack for is translating traditional strategies to non-traditional careers,” says Silverman.
He’s even worked with businessmen and women in the areas of performance and burlesque, helping them sort out the complex net of deductions that comes with their unique fields.
“The arts and creative class endeavors have been a passion of mine for a long time,” says Silverman.
And it’s this passion and uniquely specialized experience that he’ll be bringing to the table during the Kick Start Your Photography Career: Advice from the Pros lecture.
Hosted by Tiffany Silverman, Professor of Arts Appreciation at the Citadel, the lecture will feature a short presentation by each of the speakers followed by a panel discussion and audience Q & A. From experience in the field to successfully running a fine arts business, field-specific investment advice and marketing strategy tips, the lecture will cover the broad range of issues any artist should consider before engaging in their art career full time or launching an art-specific nonprofit.
The lecture, Kick Start Your Photography Career: Advice from the Pros, will be held on Thursday, April 10, in the Citadel’s Fine Arts building, Bond Hall Room 165, starting at 6:30 p.m. A public reception with the panelists will follow in Capers Hall Lobby. The lecture is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by B & H Photo and Nikon.
