For the first time in almost 200 years, the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, which actually encompasses the entire state, will construct a new diocesan pastoral center.
The center will serve as the administrative and ministry headquarters for the entire state.
This past week, Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone was on hand to bless and break ground on the site of the new center, located on the former site of the WTMA radio station at the end of Orange Grove Road.
The new center will include a chancery, where church business can be discussed among statewide church leaders, a chapel and a conference center.
The center will be able to accommodate as many as 400 people, in addition to its 150-seat chapel.
This is the second major religious building announcement in West Ashley in recent months. The Jewish Community Center has announced that a new Addlestone Hebrew Academy will soon break ground.
