Owners of the former site of a longtime West Ashley vegetable shed are preparing for that property’s second life.
Jack Limehouse, owner of Limehouse Produce, last year tore down his family business’ vegetable distribution facility near the corner of Wappoo Road and Savannah Highway, to the consternation of some.
Recently, he had a sign erected proclaiming the coming of Limehouse Station, a nearly 7-acre plot that includes the shed’s former spot backing up to the West Ashley Bikeway on Wappoo, and the cinderblock buildings along the highway.
Limehouse said this week that he, a Columbia-based developer, and family member brokers Chip and Buck, are looking to build-to-suit a combination of retail and housing on the site.
He said most likely the retail would front onto the streets, with the housing tucked in behind. Several potential buyers have nibbled, but the right one has yet to sign a contract.
Whatever projected is slated for that property would have to clear local zoning and use ordinances first.
Last year, Charlie Smith, a West Ashley real estate agent and a member of the county’s zoning board, fought to stop Limehouse from razing the shed, saying it was of important local historic value.
Smith’s efforts fell short, and only delayed the demolition.
Limehouse said his approach was to “try and put up something everybody in the community would be happy with.”
