A Facebook page has been created to support the revitalization of Citadel Mall, where voices local and beyond can be heard chiming in on what to do next.
Earlier this month, this paper and other media outlets reported that West Ashley’s commercial cornerstone had been put into foreclosure by a federal judge.
The current owners of the mall had fallen significantly behind on their payments for the multi-million dollar loan they took out on the property.
Politicians are forming ad hoc committees to see what can be done and make sure the public sector speaks in a uniform voice.
The three-decade old mall had fallen on hard times of late, as evidence by former hallway kiosks taking up residence in former storefronts. At times the parking lots are quite empty.
Some of the voices on the Facebook group’s page include exhortations for a Macy’s to locate here. “If you build it, we will come!” writes local Scott Davis, who then provides a link to a group trying to lure the tony store to the Lowcountry.
One potentially accented voice on the group belongs to Chantal Bouvier de Lamotte-detender, a massage shop owner recently emigrated from France with a taste for the finer things, according to her profile. She calls for the mall opening itself to small-breed dogs.
Others call of an IKEA, while some clamor for a Nordstrom’s to be brought in – the consensus being the need for fancier shops.
Regardless of what happens next in the financial and legal wrangling over the massive mall, support for its revitalization is evident by more than 1,000 supporters signing up within the first four days the group formed online.
