Home Team BBQ Owner and Pitmaster Aaron Siegel was presented with area non-profit Operation Home’s annual “Kris Basala Person of the Year “award at a special ceremony during the annual fundraiser Drum It Up event on October 20, 2013. The Basala Award is in honor of long-time Operation Home board member Kris Basala whose outsized life skills were matched by his extraordinarily big heart. Kris brought his leadership, his creativity, and his gifts for communication and organization to his Board role. When cancer claimed the life of Kris in 2011, it robbed the Lowcountry of a man who made a difference; however, left behind are many individuals who live life with the Basala vision of a better place for all to live.
Giving back to the local community is one of the top priorities of the Home Team BBQ and they have made that an important focus since they opened in 2006. Local non-profit Operation Home was selected by Home Team BBQ early on as one of their top organizations to support and along with a group of friends, Home Team helped spearhead and host the annual Gimme Shelter event. This past year’s event raised over $54,000 (a record amount for the event) and allowed Operation Home to repair 10 homes in the local neighborhoods in the greatest need.
“This is such an amazing honor for us and we have loved doing all we can to raise money and support for Operation Home,” stated Aaron Siegel. “Our staff really embraces their focus on repairing homes for the elderly, especially those in nearby neighborhoods and hope to continue to make a big difference with this cause moving forward in the future.”
“Operation Home is honored to have the support of such a generous and creative man as Aaron, and we gratefully acknowledge his community involvement by giving him this year’s Basala’s Award,” stated Sandy Milliken, director of Operation Home.
Operation Home’s mission is to help people remain in their homes by increasing safety and accessibility through the coordination of critical home repairs for low-income residents of Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties.
