What do an Easter egg hunt, Instagram-ing for prizes and ultra rare records have in common? The 7th annual Record Store Day at Monster Music in West Ashley this Saturday, that’s what.
The fact that more than 450 limited edition vinyl releases from artists such as Flaming Lips, Drive-By Truckers, Notorious B.I.G., Devo, Green Day, Neil Young, Nirvana, and Nick Cave, will be available exclusively at independent record stores should be enough to bring any music aficionado out to Monster Music for this year’s Record Store Day. But that wasn’t enough for store owner Galen Hudson.
Along with these ultra rare albums, Monster Music’s Record Store Day will include food, prizes, live music and storewide sales.
Want to win some free stuff? Check out the Easter Egg Hunt or participate in the Instagram “Record Store Day Selfies” contest, where posting a pic of yourself at the celebration could win you a $100 Monster gift card.
Best friend snags the last Flaming Lips album before you do? Challenge him to a duel or an endurance race at the Bungee Joust jump castle.
Feel like rockin’ to some live music? Charleston’s finest will be taking the stage from 1 p.m. on with performances from Jordan Igoe, Dead 27s, Dunder Chiefs, Tyler Boone, Logan Venderlic and Guilt Ridden Troubadour.
Need some nourishment so you can keep on digging for sweet record finds? Auto Banh Food Truck, Lowcountry Creole, Cast Iron Food Truck and King of Pops will be on hand to settle your hunger pains.
If that isn’t enough for all your entertainment needs, share the day with a new friend for life by dropping by the Pet Helpers Adopt-a-thon, where several little furry monsters will be hanging out and hoping you’ll be the one to give them a forever home. And even if you don’t have room for one more fur baby, if you bring a donation item either for Pet Helpers or the Lowcountry Food Bank, you’ll be entered into a drawing for several amazing prize packages.
“Record Stores Days are a lot of fun and we encourage anyone halfway interested to come out and see what it’s all about. It’s a community-wide party and everyone’s invited,” says Hudson.
Just the fact that Monster Music is not only still in existence but thriving, despite the digital music scare of the early 2000s, is enough for Hudson to celebrate this incredible industry-wide event.
“Any noise you still hear about the ‘declining music industry’ is out-of-date and untrue. New record stores are opening, vinyl sales are skyrocketing and paid downloads are in decline. While the glory days of the nineties are long gone, a new normal’s in town and it’s good,” says Hudson.

The 7th annual Record Store Day takes place this Saturday, April 19, at Monster Music in West Ashley from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monster Music is located in the West Ashley Shoppes across from Citadel Mall at 946 Orleans Road.
