West Ashley High School hosted the 10th Annual Sandlapper Track & Field Classic on Saturday, March 5. A total of 17 schools and 895 athletes attended the event, making it the third largest track and field event in the state.
The WAHS Boys’ track team did very well, finishing in fifth place overall. Senior Darrell Singleton shined for WAHS breaking records and earning the Outstanding Runner Award in the boys’ field events. Singleton broke the stadium and meet record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10:61. He also placed first in the 200- meter dash with a time of 21:86.
The WAHS boys’ 4×100-meter relay team, made up of Singleton, Ahmad Green, Jules Brown, and T’Qele Holmes came in second place, and the 4×400-meter relay team, made up of Singleton, Isaiah Whitney, Holmes, and Justin Berry placed third.
In the boys’ field events Brown, Thomas Kingston, and Tyler Walker, each finished in the top five. Kingston placed fourth and Walker placed fifth in pole vaulting, and Brown placed fifth in high jump.
WAHS Assistant Track Coach Austin Miller was pleased with the team’s overall performance. “[It] was a good barometer of where we are as a team,” says Miller. “It shows that our team is young, but has a lot of potential.”
Overall, with combined team scores of the boys and girls, WAHS finished 11 out of 17 schools. Summerville finished first, Wando finished second, and Northwestern finished third.
