The following were taken from actual incident reports filed last week by the City of Charleston’s Police Department. These are not convictions and the names of businesses, complainants, and suspects have been left off to protect the innocent. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty, of course.
July 15 | Embezzlement
A West Ashley fried chicken restaurant owner reported that one of his cashiers had told him to void a $50 charge for a prepaid telephone card as the customer no longer wished to purchase it. Later, the owner discovered his till was $50 short. Double-checking the prepaid card, the owner called the number it had been linked to, and the same employee ended up answering the phone.
July 15 | Simple assault
A driver reported an SUV swerving all over Glenn McConnell Parkway, almost striking his vehicle. When the driver pulled alongside the SUV and rolled down his window to say something, the other driver threw a full water bottle into his car, striking him in the face, splitting his lip.

A man entered an Ashley River Road barbershop to speak to his cousin about helping him beat up another man who had just stolen $20 from him. When the cousin offered to call the police for assistance, an argument broke out that ended up in the man pushing his cousin to the floor and punching him repeatedly in head. Police reported obvious injuries to the cousin’s mouth.
July 16 | Simple assault
A young woman told police that while she was recreating at a West Ashley skate-park, another skater jumped up and grabbed her by the ponytail with enough force to pull her off the back of a 7-foot-tall skate ramp. The girl fell backward and flipped over and landed on her face, eventually leading to medical attention and a referral to an oral surgeon.
July 16 | Burglary
Roommates returned to their Seloris Court apartment to find several items missing. One roommate reported missing a 60-pill bottle of the epilepsy medicine she keeps on her bedside nightstand, as well as a loaded .38 caliber pistol. The other roommate reported missing from his room a loaded 9mm pistol and 10 Oxycodone pills.
July 17 | Burglary
A customer at an Ashley River Road storage center discovered that someone had cut the lock off his unit’s door. Pulling the lock out, the customer opened the unit to find someone had stolen four “Italian ice” coolers, replete with sun-umbrellas, as well as four additional coolers. Employees said two truckloads people had come by earlier to take some items out of the unit, but could not provide video of the act or a license plate from either of the vehicles.
July 17 | Simple assault
A man being transported in an ambulance to a West Ashley hospital became aggressive and uncooperative. As an emergency medical technician tried to control the situation, the man kicked the EMT and spit in his face.
