Drunkenness
A man riding a bicycle near the intersection of Ashley River and Akers roads called police, saying there was a heavily intoxicated woman in the ditch who couldn’t walk or stand on her own. When police arrived, the woman was sitting on the ground “in the mud” near the intersection. When asked what day it was, the woman said with bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, “Australia Day.”

General information
Police responded to a “family dispute with a machete” at a Briarcliff Road residence. The resident came home from work to find his brother in the house, intoxicated, and yelling at the resident’s dog. When the resident walked past his brother and into his bedroom, the brother threatened him, wielding a machete, saying, “Do you want to die today?” The brother soon threw the machete into the bedroom. The resident said he didn’t want to press charges, but to get his brother help for substance abuse and anger issues.

Theft from an auto
Police found three cars parked behind a Sam Rittenberg car stereo store had been broken into. One of the cars belonging to a store employee had thousands of dollars in car stereo equipment stolen from it, including a $1,200 stereo, a $900 amplifier, and $600 in speakers. Nothing was reported missing from the other two cars.

Simple assault
A caller at a Savannah Highway drugstore called to say there was a fight on the floor of the store, but that they couldn’t see what was happening from their spot in the pharmacy. When police arrived, they found several displays knocked over, and items spread all over the floor. An employee said she was attacked by another woman, with whom she has had problems in the past, for how she waved at another woman riding in the assailant’s car.

Confiscated property
A patient at a West Ashley medical facility checked out against medical advice after being confronted with suspicions he was using illegal drugs while in the hospital. Police searched the room and found a needle and traces of what appeared to be heroin stored in a disposable cup that was placed on a shelf in the room.

Shoplifting
An employee confronted two women who had allegedly attempted to hide two bags of frozen shrimp worth $80 into a purse and then tried to leave an Old Towne Road grocery store without paying for them. The two women were seen fleeing across Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, into another grocery store. Later, while on patrol, an officer saw a woman who fit the description of one of the alleged thieves run out of the other grocery store and jump into a Cadillac Escalade while carrying an infant in her arms. The woman said she had been in the first grocery with her sister, and that the infant belonged to her sister. Police allowed the woman to return the baby to its mother.

Assisting other agencies
Police assisted members of a mobile crisis unit carry out committal papers on a man apparently suffering from mental health issues. The man had allegedly made a threat with a firearm the day before. When they arrived at the Piper Lane home of the man’s mother, the mother informed authorities her son was in a car in her backyard.

Counterfeit check
A local businessman reported someone had used an altered check from his business to purchase more than $3,000 in equipment from a West Ashley hardware store. Authorities examined the check, which had the man’s business account code printed on the check, but had been altered to make it appear it was from a different company.
