The following were taken from actual incident reports filed last week by the City of Charleston Police Department. These are not convictions and the names of businesses, complainants, and suspects have been left out to protect the innocent. All suspects are  innocent until proven guilty … of course.

May 16 | LARCENY BY FALSE PRETENSES, SWINDLE
A Fieldfare Way grandfather sent $4,000 over the phone who claimed to represent his jailed grandson in Florida. The grandfather was set to send an additional $4,000 the next day, but spoke with his grandson on the phone, who told him he was not in jail and had not been arrested.

May 16 | LARCENY BY FALSE PRETENSES, SWINDLE
A WalMart loss prevention officer told police that two women attempted to load $14,000 onto 50 different gift cards, but their apparently stolen credit card was declined. The two suspects got into a pickup and fled the area.

May 16 | TRESPASS
A man told police that while he sat on a bench in front of a Savannah Highway motel, an employee came out and tried to choke him to get him to leave. “I just asked for a cup of coffee and that white redneck choked me,” the man told police, before going into what an officer described as a “tirade” about being “Jamaican and a Black Panther.” The employee denied touching the man, which was corroborated by two witnesses.

May 16  | THEFT FROM BUILDING
A Verdier Boulevard woman told police that upon returning to her apartment that evening, she discovered her freezer was open and two ham-and-cheese Hot Pockets were missing. She also soon discovered that her 14-carat ring studded with jewels was also missing. The woman suspects her former live-in boyfriend may have taken the ring and sandwiches, as he still has a key to the apartment.

May 17 | ALL OTHER LARCENY
A Moonlight Drive woman told police that she found an empty box from Fingerhut in her mailbox that was supposed to contain a gold pendant and crucifix, valued together at more than $500.

May 17 | DRUGS, NARCOTICS VIOLATION
While patrolling the Ashleyville Neighborhood, officers stopped a man driving a Prius near the intersection of Tripe Street and Sycamore Avenue, and found nearly 800 grams of marijuana in the car. Additionally, officers found two digital scales, a 9mm pistol loaded with16 hollowpoint rounds, four cellphones, and $370 in counterfeit money.

May 18  | CRIMINAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, SIMPLE ASSAULT
A Rice Pond Drive woman told police that her husband pushed her out of the way, exclaimed, “Give me my meds!” and stormed out of the house after an argument escalated. As he left the house, the woman said her husband twice pushed her down on the couch, pulling her hair and  grabbing her.

May 18 | THEFT OF YARD ACCESSORIES
A Toura Lane woman demanded that police increase patrols of her street after someone stole her Bird of Paradise plant and neighbors allowed their dogs to defecate in her yard. Officers suggested she invest in a camera.

May 18 | TELEPHONE CALLS, OBSCENE, HARASSING
A local code enforcement officer told police that he’d been repeatedly called at his West Ashley home after he sent a letter to a James Island resident who was keeping a horse in their yard. The code officer said the horse was fine, but that the homeowner had to clean up the “solid waste” in the yard.

May 18 | ROBBERY, HAND
A teller at a Sam Rittenberg Boulevard bank told police a man came in, handed her a note saying, “empty the draw [sic] no ink pack, I have nothing to loose [sic].” The teller gave the man an amount of money, and the robber left.

May18  | BREAKING AND ENTERING
Police arrested a woman as she crawled out the window of a Yeadon Avenue home with a ski mask, gloves, and three pairs of blue shoe covers. The owner of the house had complained in recent weeks that the woman would not leave him alone. He also found a GPS tracking device attached to the muffler of his car, which was parked at his house. Police also found a thumb drive in the woman’s purse.
