Every year, at about this time, for the past few years, St. Andrews Parks and Playground begins looking for heroes in its midst. This year is no exception.
This week, the parks began taking nominations for the next inductees to its Hall of Fame. The award is a recognition of those who have made an outstanding and lasting contribution to the community  in a variety of ways.
Last year, former Olympian and WNBA’er Katrina McClain and baseball coach Dusty Rhodes were added to the raft of bronzed plaques placed on the outside wall of the facility facing the main tennis courts.
Rhodes had for years been a trusted member of the parks’ family, coaching in a variety of recreational sports, primarily youth baseball. Rhodes had passed away from cancer.
According to Parks Director of Marketing & Public Relations, Mark Spinn, there has been a groundswell for members of 2005 youth baseball team that won a national championship, a few who have gone on to play Division 1 baseball at USC and other big-time programs.
But Spinn said that members of that team would have to wait their turn, as the nominations are restricted until 10 years after their accomplishment, or first time serving or volunteering for the parks.
Those who have passed away, like Coach Rhodes, can waive the 10-year requirement. Inductees have to have been involved with the parks programs as either an athlete, coach, as part of community service, team, celebrity or business.
Past inductees also included former St. Andrew’s ‘baller Darius Rucker and Tim Linker, whose family has devoted years of service to the parks.
Nominations will be accepted online at  www.standrewsparks.com through Nov. 22.
