The winners of the 2015 Westie Awards turned out last Wednesday. Feb. 18 for a reception that brought together community leaders, local government leaders, civil rights leaders, business leaders, volunteers, and educators. The reception was held at Gala Desserts in the Avondale Business District. While the golden cow trophies may simply be plastic replicas of West Ashley’s most endearing landmark (the Coburg Cow), the recipients are the real deal, each with a heart of gold.
Each of the 15 winners were nominated for helping make West Ashley a better place to live in 2014. It was a big year for our part of town — the finally City started really paying attention to what was happening to our neighborhoods, our local county council representative took marriage equality all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and a new principal at our local high school worked hard in bringing our former two schools together to say we’re part of the same team.
Gala Desserts rolled out an impressive display of pastries and tapas for the crowd that engaged in lively discussions about the future of our part of town. Congratulations to the 2015 class of Westie Award Winners. Thank-you for making West Ashley a better place to live, work, eat, and shop.
