Earlier this month, the local Carolina Lady Anglers chapter donated a whopping $11,000 to After Care Essentials to support women recovering from cancer surgery that may not have insurance.
Jane Barr, a local Realtor and “spokesangler” for the group, said that for years they had been donating their proceeds to other worthy causes, like the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. But she said, their work was mostly for research, and the CLA wanted to help women more directly.
Barr recently had a friend go through breast cancer, was surprised and touched by how hard it is for the women after the disease is beat back and the surgeries are over. She was also surprised how comprehensive some of the problems like her friend faced after leaving hospital care.
She said that Kay Reid, who runs the After Care Essentials, which carries a full range of fitted brassieres and other helpful post-cancer products, told her that many women show up needing help but that their insurances sometimes did not cover the gear they needed and she sold.
So, taking the money the anglers earned last year from its big tournament, they donated the money to directly support those women coming into Reid’s shop, located behind D.D. Peckers on Savannah Highway. “We just don’t want those women turned away because they don’t have the money or the insurance,” said Barr.
