It has been an amazing run for a young West Ashley High School Wildcats team. And even though they fell short of winning the region title last week against rival James Island, that run is not over yet. The Wildcats will host Lexington in the first round of playoffs on Thursday, February 18 at 7 p.m. in the WAHS main gym.
Following the loss to the Trojans last Friday, the Wildcats finish the regular season with a   17-5 , 8-2 in the region, with both of those losses in Region 7-AAAA coming against James Island. They have also dropped two game this season to Summerville High. It’s quite possible they could eventually meet up with either or both in the playoffs. “Our team has the confidence we could beat them,” says head basketball coach Ronnie Dupre. But first they’ll have to beat a good Lexington team.
“Lexington, is a perennially strong program with strong winning tradition,” says DuPre. “It will be the first playoff game for several of our players but we are confident that our team will play with great effort.”
According to DuPre, his young team has greatly exceeded anyone’s expectations this season. “Our starting lineup has consisted of two sophomores and two freshmen. Our team has competed well against older more experienced teams,” says DuPre. “This team loves to play and compete. They practice hard each day and they have a strong desire to improve.”
DuPre says the core of this team has a bright future as long as they can use what they learned this year and continue to improve. “We have areas in which we need to improve so it’s important that each player attacks the weaknesses in the offseason along with getting stronger. We will push them to not rest on their laurels and strive to reach their potential.”
