It was a sad day for hot dog lovers in West Ashley when Jack’s Cosmic Dogs officially closed it’s doors on Ashley River Road last year. But then it reopened earlier this year as Mex 1 Coastal Cantina and locals flocked to the now-popular taqueria. The lesson here is while it often hurts, sometimes change is good.
A few of the same people behind turning the West Ashley Jack’s into Mex 1 are hoping for the same magic at the former Jack’s location on James Island.
Mex 1 co-owners Dave and Chrissy Lorenz along with John Ferguson, who is a co-owner of Hubee D’s Tenders & Wings on Savannah Highway, plan to turn the Jack’s Cosmic Dogs on Folly Road on James Island into the Bohemian Bull Tavern & Beer Garden.
The building is currently undergoing some massive renovations as it is converted from a family-friendly hot dog joint into a massive beer garden. The website for the Bohemian Bull (www.bohemianbull.com) claims it will be Charleston “largest beer garden,” with more than 100 draft beers, ciders, and craft beer bottles. The website also says they will be offering “hand-spanked” burgers, meaty wings, hearty pub grub, a whiskey bar, and lawn games and live music.
