Still waiting for one of those blue “all-in-one” county recycling bins to be delivered to your door? Yeah, they’re great!
Unfortunately, there’s no real way of telling when your (street) number is going to come up and your residence will be the next home of one of those 95-gallon “single-stream” beauties.
In March, the Charleston County Environmental Management Department (CCEMD) began an expansion project in downtown and East Cooper neighborhoods, implementing roughly 9,000 bins.
As a result, the county is approaching 50 percent of homes with bins, and there’s a new recycling center that nearing completion.
But there is some good news for those of you are still separating your recyclables into smaller bins. The department goes through an expansion every three months or so.
And the next one, slated for June, is going to be a doozy.
Christina Moskos, a community representative at CCEMD, said Friday that the next expansion would include between 25-30,000 additional residences.
While those above her pay-grade were not releasing specifically which neighborhoods would be next, she insisted a chunk of those were slated for West Ashley neighborhoods.
“Hopefully, it will be a significant number in West Ashley,” said Moskos, who’s still waiting for a bin-on-wheels to be delivered to her door.
The recycling bins are part of County Commission’s commitment to the environment and efforts to extend the lifespan of its current landfill, according to Councilmember Anna Johnson.
