This month, the Charleston Friends of the Library present its second book sale of the year with a special tribute to Charleston County Public Librarian Cynthia Hurd, who worked for years at the St. Andrew’s Branch Library in West Ashley. Hurd was among the nine victims of a shooting tragedy at Emanuel A.M.E. Church last year. The St. Andrew’s Library has since been renamed the Cynthia Graham Hurd St. Andrews Regional Library.
Held over the course of three days — Friday, June 17, Saturday, June 18, and Sunday, June 19, there will be more than 13,000 books, DVDs, and CDs, available with prices starting at $1 for paperbacks and $3 for hardback books. Items include mysteries, romances, classics, children’s books, local histories, cookbooks and a variety of non-fiction topics. Children’s books start at just .50 cents.Special pricing will be offered on Sunday.
During the sale, which will be held at the Main Library downtown on Calhoun Street, special bookmarks will be given to each patron, and memorial prints from famed local photographer, Michael Kaynard, will be available for purchase with proceeds going towards the Cynthia Graham Hurd Foundation for Literacy and Civic Engagement.
The Cynthia Graham Hurd Foundation was established to continue Hurd’s work and legacy of engaging the community through her love and appreciation for reading. As a librarian, Hurd stirred a passion for reading across generations and literary genres. The Foundation will advocate for the expansion of literacy and availability of books to everyone.
The Charleston Friends of the Library, a non-profit volunteer organization, raises money through book sales to help fund Library services, equipment, training, materials and public programming. The Friends collect and sort donated books for resale to raise money. This branch sale is one of five book sales held throughout the year by the Friends.
A special event for Friends of the Library members will be held at the library, Thursday evening, June 16 from 5-7:30 p.m. Members can join at the door.
