County Councilmember Colleen Condon, who represents much of West Ashley, announced this week that she would not be running for re-election.
Condon has served three consecutive four-year terms on council.
Condon released the following statement, which reads in part:
“I still have work to finish this year. However, it is time for me to put my work hours into my legal career instead of dividing my time between Council and law, and make more time for my family in 2017.”
Condon started a new family, marrying her wife, Nichols Bleckley, earlier this year after the federal government ended states’ ability to block same-sex marriages.
Condon, the mother of one teenager, had fought nationally for the right to get married.
She has endorsed local realtor Patrick Bell, who represents West Ashley on the county Planning Commission.
Brantley Moody has also announced his candidacy. The banker is the son of City Councilman Bill Moody, who also represents West Ashley; and the brother of Brian Moody, who served three terms on the county School Board.
Condon said that she was “honored” to have been elected three times to Council, adding, “ I will absolutely continue to serve as a volunteer in the community of Charleston I love so much, but my time on Council will end this December.”
