The recent 5th annual Avondale 5K was once again a runaway success, with more participants and money raised than ever before.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, 510 runners, walkers, and in some cases, their dogs and children in tow took to the streets of several West Ashley neighborhoods, including Ashley Forest and Wedgepark, for some good competition under perfectly blue skies.
This year, the event raised $70,000 for the Charles Webb Center, a private school and organization located in West Ashley that teaches and cares for children with physical and mental disabilities.
Last year, the event raised $56,000 for the center and had 486 participants. Local businesses and donors have continued to “sponsor” some of the children that attend the center through donations.
Neighbors and supporters lined the streets to cheer on the participants, Possibly the happiest competitor was Mary Legare Chamberlin Whaley, who was the fastest woman the second year in a row.
In doing so, Whaley actually ran by her old house along Tall Oak Avenue, the street that served as the lead-up to the finishing chute in front of the sponsoring Triangle Char and Bar restaurant.
Only eight men finished faster than Whaley’s 19:24 pace, which was more than two minutes slower than the overall winner, Clay Askew, who turned in a 17:03 chip time.
Askew also turned in the fastest time last year, but was 25 seconds faster this year. Whaley, who finished 13th overall in 2013, was 36 seconds faster this year.
