Sophomore basketball player Breauna Robinson has made a lasting impression on her coaches and the athletic director at West Ashley High School this season. “Even though Breaunna is only a sophomore, she possesses the unique ability to be a strong floor leader,” says West Ashley High Athletic Director Richard Luden. “It is refreshing to watch a young athlete with outstanding basketball knowledge. I am going to enjoy watching her grow over the next two years.”
Her coaches are very impressed with her performance and sportsmanship as well. “Bre is very humble and very quick. Her strengths are her speed and quickness,” says Head Girls’ Basketball Coach Maria Williams. They agree that she continues to show potential out on the court each and every day she plays. In fact, Robinson has already been invited to captain meetings, and appears to be quite a leader on the team. She even earned the nickname “Team Bre” from Assistant Coach Candace Jordan.
“She gets after the ball on defense [and] she actually led us in scoring for the last few games,” says Williams. At a mere 5’1” Robinson acknowledges her height as a weakness, but she doesn’t let her small size diminish her strong presence on the court. Since the beginning of the season she has been the starting point guard, running the plays for the team. “She does a good job of handling the point for us, and believe me, that’s not an easy position to play for me,” says Williams. “It takes a lot of heat. She’s been able to endure, and I’m proud of her.”
Robinson says she started playing basketball six years ago because of her mother. What began as recreational play has become a passion. Robinson devotes at least 12 hours a week to play or practice. She also often spends her lunch time with teammates watching film and discussing strategies to improve game time performance. One strategy she uses is listening to music. It helps her mentally prepare for the game so she can focus on her goals.
She recently set a personal record in the game against James Island by scoring a total of 24 points. “I had a slow start, but finished the season out strong,” says Robinson. Despite her passion for the game, she says her favorite thing about basketball is actually her teammates. “They’re like family to me,” she says.
After she finishes high school, Robinson wants to either go to college or join the Army. If she goes to college, the University of North Carolina would be her first choice; she hopes to be able to play basketball there as well. As far as choosing a major, she says she enjoys kids and science, so pediatric nursing is her primary goal.
